DVLA

Changes to UK Driving Licences from 8th June 2015

The use of the paper counterpart of a driving licence is no longer accepted when hiring a vehicle.

It has been replaced by an online service where you can:

  • View your driving record, eg vehicles you can drive, penalty points and disqualifications
  • Create a licence check code to share your driving record with someone, eg a car hire company or your employer.

With effect from 8th June 2015 the paper driving licence will no longer be issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), so when you renew or change anything on your licence such as your address – from now on, only a new photocard will be sent back and everything else will be recorded through the DVLAs online database.

  • Driving Licence Paper counter parts are no longer accepted as proof of driving history
  • Driving history can be accessed online using a Driver Licence number and NI (National Insurance) Number
  • The driver history record is invalid if given to the vehicle hire company more than 21 days before the vehicle pick-up time
  • It is a condition of hire that the driver’s licence history be verified before a vehicle may be released for hire

4 simple steps to get your check code online and share your driving record with us:

Step 1

Obtaining a check code is very easy. All you need to do is go to the gov.uk website at: https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

Enter your Driving Licence number, your National Insurance number and your postcode as it appears on your Driving Licence.

Step 2

Review the information and then select “Share your licence information (3)”

Step 3

Create a code to then send to FVTH Vehicle Hire. You can only do this within 21 days of the time you want to pick up the vehicle.

Step 4

Send the check code generated to FVTH Vehicle Hire with the last 8 digits of your driving licence.

Please note the code is CASe senSITIve and will not work if it is not replicated exactly.

The code can only be used once and thereafter no-one else can access your information.

Please Note: In the circumstances where we have to call the DVLA (this service unavailable on Sundays) to confirm driver history there will be a charge.

Key Points:

You need to generate a single use check code on the DVLA website not more than 21 days before picking up your hire vehicle.
Go to https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence
Enter your Driving Licence number, your National Insurance number and your postcode as it appears on your Driving Licence.
Create a licence check code to share your driving record with us.
Email the code (remember it is case sensitive) and the last 8 digits of your driving licence number to rentals@fvth-ltd.co.uk
You still need to bring your driving licence with you when picking up the vehicle.
