The beginnings, three trucks …
Founded in 1986 by brothers Jim and Colin Brown, Farnborough Van & Truck Rental (FVTH) began as a small family-run truck rental business. They began operating from their grandfather’s yard in Chapel Road. Building on a family background in engineering and vehicle trading. The brothers started with just three trucks and a single telephone number that remains unchanged today!
Focussing on excellent customer service and developing a strong local reputation across Farnborough, Poole and Basingstoke, FVTH established the foundations for what would become one of the south’s leading commercial vehicle rental businesses.
Growing and developing partnerships …
The company’s growth accelerated during the late 1980s and 1990s. The recession created opportunities to expand the fleet. Opening of new branches and a move from second-hand to new vehicles reflected FVTH’s long-term ambitions. Understanding the importance of collaboration, becoming a founding member of United Rentals in 1992 was pivotal. Developing a lasting partnership with Greenhous DAF in 1994 further strengthened the business. By 1995, the fleet had grown to more than 100 vehicles, marking an important milestone in the company’s development
Building the team …
As the commercial vehicle industry evolved, FVTH continued to invest in modern technology. While expanding its depot network and adapting to changing environmental and regulatory standards was an on-going process. Keeping up with legislation changes from the introduction of Euro emissions legislation and digital tachographs to DVS improvements. Opening of depots in Uxbridge, Iver, Portsmouth and later Wraysbury, the business consistently responded to customer needs while maintaining a modern, reliable fleet. In 2017, Tim Houghton joined as Managing Director, helping to guide the next phase of the company’s growth.
Over 500 vehicles on fleet …
Today in 2026, as FVTH celebrates its 40th anniversary, the business reflects on four decades of steady expansion, innovation and great customer service. Milestones such as reaching a 500+ vehicle fleet, celebrating 30 years with United Rentals, and investing in enhanced maintenance facilities. All demonstrating our commitment to continuous improvement. Travelling the journey with customers and suppliers, where partnerships have been formed over the decades.
So from humble beginnings with three trucks to a respected national operation, FVTH’s success has been built on strong family values, trusted partnerships and a dedication to keeping customers moving. Thanks to all our loyal customers, our supportive suppliers and everyone who has crossed our path on our journey, who has made us the company we are today. We are looking forward to the next decade and keeping our fleets on the road.
